Billing overseas clients means two different questions: what number should the client see, and what is that worth to you? Billable keeps them separate on purpose.
Step by step
- Set your home currency — Choose the currency you want to think and report in. Everything on your dashboard is converted back to it.
- Invoice in the client’s currency — Set the currency on each invoice, or on the project so that every invoice under it starts out right. The client is billed in money they recognise.
- Read the dashboard in yours — Totals across every currency roll up into your home currency, so the figures actually add up to something meaningful.
- Record what really landed — The reference rate is not what your bank gave you. When you mark an invoice paid, record what actually arrived to see the difference.
A note on accuracy
Converted totals are indicative — they tell you roughly what your book of work is worth in your own money. For what a specific payment actually cost you, use the payment details recorded when the invoice was settled.
