Tracking time and billing it

Run a live timer or log hours by hand against a project, then pull unbilled time straight onto an invoice and export any timesheet to CSV.

Time tracking only pays off if capturing time is easier than forgetting to. Billable gives you two ways in — a live timer and a manual entry — and one way out: onto an invoice.

Step by step

  1. Start the timer, or log the hours — Start a timer when you begin a task and let it run, or type in hours and minutes afterwards if you have already done the work. Either way the entry is tied to a project.
  2. Control it from wherever you are — The running timer sits in the top bar. Pause it when you step away, resume when you are back, stop it when the task is done.
  3. Bill the time — When you raise an invoice, pull the project’s unbilled time onto it. Those hours flip from unbilled to billed, so they cannot be charged twice.
  4. Export when someone asks — Need the underlying hours outside Billable? Export the timesheet to CSV.

Habits that make it stick

  • Start the timer before you start the task, not after — retro-fitting a morning’s work is where hours go missing.
  • Log the small stuff. The ten minutes on a call and the half hour on revisions are exactly the time that never reaches an invoice.
  • Check each project’s unbilled total before you invoice it, rather than after.

Quirks worth knowing

The small things that trip people up.

The timer follows you around the app

Once it is running you can pause, resume or stop it from the top bar on any page — you never have to navigate back to where you started it.

Every entry belongs to a project

Time is tracked against a project, not floating on its own. That is what makes each project's tracked, unbilled and billed totals add up.

Forgetting to stop the timer is handled

If a timer has been running for hours, Billable can nudge you about it — a running timer left overnight is caught the same day, not at invoice time.

Unbilled is the number that matters

Tracked time splits into unbilled and billed. Unbilled is the pile of work you have done and not yet charged for, and it is the fastest way to spot money left on the table.

CSV export is per timesheet

Any timesheet can be exported to CSV in a click — useful when a client wants to see the hours behind an invoice, or when you want the raw rows for your own records.
